“Ana Min Al-Yahud”, de Almog Behar

The work of Almog Behar (born in 1978, in Netanya, Israel) belongs to a cultural and artistic trend in Israeli society that sees the recovery of both the Arabic language (and other minor Jewish languages) and the history of Middle-Eastern and North-African Jewish immigrants (Mizrachim and Sefaradim) as means of elaborating and understanding the identity anxieties of an Israel-born generation of children and grandchildren of those immigrants, which grew up in the context of Ashkenazi hegemony. In the short story “Ana min al-yahud”, here translated to Portuguese, the protagonist gathers and recreates his memories and recollections from his grandfather’s Iraqi accent. The narrative is quite successful in bringing up ever more questions rather than answering any of them, revealing the contradictions of Israeli identity.A obra de Almog Behar (nascido em 1978 em Netanya, Israel) faz parte de um fenômeno cultural e artístico na sociedade israelense que vê na língua árabe, e em outras línguas judaicas, e na história dos imigrantes oriundos do Oriente Médio e do Norte da África (mizrachitas e sefaraditas) uma forma de elaborar e compreender as inquietações identitárias de uma geração de israelenses nativos, netos e filhos desses imigrantes, que cresceram em um contexto de hegemonia asquenazita. O conto “Ana min al-yahud”, em tradução inédita ao português, é uma coleção e recriação de memórias de um narrador a partir do sotaque iraquiano de seu avô. A narrativa tem o mérito de levantar mais questões do que resolvê-las, revelando as contradições da identidade israelense
